What guests expect from online ordering now

Guest expectations are set by the best experience they had anywhere, not by other restaurants. Every polished app on their phone quietly raises the bar for yours. Here is what the bar looks like now.
Fast, on a phone, without an app
Guests expect to tap a link and order. Not download, not register, not pinch-zoom a PDF menu. A slow or clumsy page does not read as a small flaw; it reads as a reason to order somewhere else.
Honesty about time and availability
A realistic ready time kept is worth more than an optimistic one broken. Guests plan around what you tell them. The same goes for availability: discovering at checkout, or worse at pickup, that an item was never available burns trust fast.
Their order, their way
Modifiers stopped being a luxury. Guests expect to hold the sauce, swap the side, and note the allergy, and they expect the kitchen to actually receive those details. Every customization that survives the trip from phone to pass is trust earned.
Remembered, not resold
Returning guests expect the second order to be easier: saved details, visible history, a quick reorder. What they do not expect is to feel like a stranger at a place they order from twice a month.
None of these expectations require novelty. They require care, and the restaurants that meet them make it look effortless, which is exactly the point.
